Rabbits for magic shows

Everybody makes a relation between a magician and a bunny pulled out of a hat. And people have expressions like: How Amazing! – How fun! – I want the magician with a rabbit for my party!

But before you ask for such a trick, there are some things to keep in mind.

Behind the stage the rabbits suffer. I respect my colleagues who choose to work with rabbits, and I hope that they are doing their best to take care of the animals.
But for me, as a magician, I do not work with rabbits because if I'm doing my best and the show is entertaining and the tricks outstanding, I don't need to resort to using a rabbit for people to remember my show.

Sleight of hand: the reality is not what you think.
Let me describe this situation before you decide to have a rabbit at your party. The regular magic shows are 30 to 45 minutes long. Making the rabbit appear at the beginning of the show is not going to work very well, unless you want the show to end quickly. That means the rabbit needs to be kept in a small box for anywhere from 15 to 40 minutes, with low oxygen and no light. The rabbit can’t move, the rabbit can’t jump, the rabbit can’t be free, etc… All of this because at the end of the show, the rabbit gets to be the "star" of the party and the children get to be amazed for about 2 minutes. Ok, let's make the rabbit appear -- wham! .. Oops. The rabbit is confused and dizzy, not because of the things I just mentioned, but because the magician shakes the box for the “magical effect.” (I say we all try it ourselves first to see how it feels.) After the rabbit appears, then what? The screaming and applause, of course, which is why the rabbit is there in the first place. The rabbit doesn't understand what's going on (as far as we know). But one thing we don't have to guess about is that the rabbit, at any moment, is going to be pooping and starting to smell bad. He's an animal, what do you expect? That the rabbit appears and says: "Sorry, guys, I pooped because I felt bad inside this tiny space, with no food, air or light. I hope you understand." Now that would be something!

Ok. Let’s assume that the rabbit is fine for some minutes and the rabbit is “trained” for many years to support this inhumane treatment because he is “an animal." You have to think about the other people at the party and if they might be allergic to the rabbit. "Hey, come to my party, and afterward, you'll have a great sinus infection!… OMG how fun!" Then if the rabbit is pooping and peeing, the magician can say, "Ok! Time for more fun! Time to clean the carpet and the floor." Then if you think that the guests are going to remember this party with a rabbit, you are right! And the memories will last for you, too -- along with the smell at your house for the next couple of days.

These are just a few examples of situations with "magic bunnies."

Before you hire a magician with a rabbit, be sure to inquire about how the magician takes care of the rabbit or any animal for the show, and be sure that they have some extra insurance to protect your investment. And if you are still worried, then don't have a rabbit at your party -- that is probably the best insurance for the rabbit.

Preparing for magic

Ever since I was a little boy, nothing could call my attention like magic! I opened my eyes to magic early on in those days when I was a kid. Today I am here preparing magic shows, and it seems like nothing has changed. I am as in love with magic today as I was many years ago.

Preparing for a magic show is not only about magic tricks. It’s also about preparing for anything that could happen at the magic show. Since doing magic shows for 20 years, I’m still excited taking time to see tricks, repeating tricks again and again, keeping the routine in my mind, practice my timing and even some expressions. To be prepared for all of that is important. But on the date and at the time of the show, anything can happen. More or
fewer people might arrive than expected. The location might change at the last minute. Guests are late. Then there’s the rain. This is why as a magician, I need to be prepared to be prepared. For anything. My reality, my here and now, shows me that my experience of 20 years doing magic will mean nothing if I am not prepared for the fact that anything can happen at the shows.

A new show is a new experience and needs to be as special as shows before that moment. That’s why I enjoy what I do: magic, every day putting more effort into creating new routines, not only to surprise people, but also to surprise myself, and still be prepared to be prepared.

How to hire the perfect magician for your party?

Hiring a magician for a party or special event has become popular. People hire magicians for kid’s parties, festivals, schools, corporate events, libraries, adult parties, etc.

There are many services that entertainment companies offer for events, such as clowns, bounce houses, face painting, balloon makers, etc.

When you decide to hire a magician, you need to ask yourself what you want from the magician for your party. It is different to hire a magician for a kid’s birthday party than for a festival or a strolling cocktail party.

Every customer wants the best act or magic show for the event, and from my 20 years of experience as a magician, every event is special.

How to decide to hire a magician

There are many factors to know before you hire a magician:

The budget, how much do you want to spend hiring a magician for your event? Just because the magician asks a high price is not an indication that he or she is the best magician to hire for your party. But that is also true if the magician asks a very low price. However, the price can give an indication whether the magician works as an amateur or is a full-time professional magician. Then you can compare that to the budget you set for hiring a magician.
Some magicians offer extra services to attract customers' attention. I would like to say that in my experience, offering a lot for a low price is a marketing trick. In other words, a professional magician charges based on the quality of his or her tricks and the magic show.
Be sure that you hire the right magician for your type of event. Consider the style of the magic show that the magician is offering. There are many styles: Comedy magic show, close up, magic with music, stage, etc. You don’t want a professional magician working 45 minutes with card tricks for a kids party where the children are 5 years old; or a comedy magic show with adult humor when your event is a family reunion with kids present; or a clown magician for an elegant corporate cocktail party.

Remember, your party is a special event, and you want something great for your guests.

As a professional magician, I want to talk about my experience and what I think the customers need to consider in order to hire a professional magician for their event.

Hiring a magician for kid’s party:
Working for kids is amazing! I really love doing magic shows for kids parties. With all the technology available to kids today, it's not easy to impress them with a simple trick and a joke! A magician needs to know how to dazzle an audience of kids! And they are full of energy! To keep the kids' attention during a 45-minute magic show is a challenge for magicians. The magician needs to be more than a magician: the magician needs to be an entertainer, a positive, creative person, someone who can read an audience and think on his feet -- someone who can build up the kids' self-esteem after they help with the tricks, leaving the kids feeling good about themselves. Someone who loves what he is doing and is devoted 100 percent to the magic show!

Let’s put kid's parties into sub-categories: Kid's birthday party, schools, libraries and general kid’s party as Christmas, festivals, etc. Ask yourself why you want to hire a magician for a kid’s birthday party.

Hiring a magician for a Kid's birthday party

To entertain the guests, consider the age of the children. Are the kids, including the birthday child, old enough to enjoy the show (usually, 4 years old and older)?
If the birthday child is 4 years old or older, do you want a kid’s magic show where the birthday child is the star of the show?
Ask how the magician interacts with the kids and keeps the kid’s attention full time.
Even though the show is for the kids, ask if the parents will enjoy the show. They may enjoy watching the kids having fun during the show, and they also might get to participate.

Hiring a magician for a school magic show
The way the magicians work for a school or summer camp magic show needs to be different. To hire a magician for a school or summer camp ask:

Can the magician handle many kids at the same time?
Is the magician able to provide proof of a background check?
Are there tricks during the show that work as educational tools for the kids?
How does the magician interact with the kids?

Hiring a magician for a General party like holidays or festivals
The magic show needs to be fast-moving and interactive and the magician needs to have the capacity to handle any situation, like the weather, audience, environment, place, number of people, etc. For example, if you hire a magician for a festival on the stage, and it starts to rain, the magician needs to be ready to jump to an alternative solution for the customer. That is why you are hiring a professional magician. The magician is an entertainer who can perform a magic show on stage, in a small setting or perform table by table with close-up magic.

To hire a magician for a kid’s party, you definitely need a magician who specializes in kid’s parties.

Hiring a magician for an adult party
There are fantastic magicians doing great shows for adult parties. But before you hire a magician, consider whether you will have an audience of all adults or if there will be children present; if you just want magic or if you'd like a combination of humor and a magic show. If you are hoping to hire a comedy magician for an adult party, that does not mean the magician needs to use swear words. But you want the humor to be fun for all age groups if there are some children present, too.

Hiring a magician for corporations.
For some corporations, a strolling magic show/ close-up tricks are perfect.
See if the magician can work with both small and large groups. The amount of time for the event is very important. For instance, perhaps you have a convention, and you need to hire a magician to entertain more than 100 people during a 30-minute break. Consider having the magician stroll through the crowd performing close-up magic, or perhaps stationing the magician at a table where the guests can pass by and watch his magic tricks. Also, you might want to consider hiring two or three magicians for this type of event to make sure that all the guests get to see a variety of close-up magic.

Since the customers aren't familiar with the magician's show and services, references from other customers can help with a decision about whether the magician is the best choice for the event. There are other factors that can make you feel more secure or confident upon making a decision to hire a magician. For instance: the magician's experience level and whether the magician works as a magician full time or part time; presentation or how the magician dresses for the shows; punctuality or having a policy to arrive early for set up time; weather policy, or how the magician handles rescheduling or refunds in the event of major rain storms, tornadoes or hurricanes. Other factors include whether the magician has a professional company that is registered with the state; how the magician interacts with customers when they call inquiring about a show; and proper invoices and paper work.

Who reviews a magician? Who can say if the magician is excellent, good or bad? Each magician has his own style and probably, some people will like the style and other people won't. There are two groups who review a magician. The first: magicians reviewing the performance of other magicians. And second: the audience reviewing the performance of a magician.

I don’t do magic shows for magicians. My magic shows are for the general audience. As a professional magician, I work hard to do the best magic show possible for my audience, whether it's a kid's birthday magic show, an adult's party magic show, school magic shows, library magic shows, corporations, etc. And after performing the magic show, I ask customers for reviews (Reviews magic show) because for me, the audience has the last word about how I performed a magic show for their party or event.

For a magician to have reviews, the key is “EXPERIENCE.” It is not fair to create a false review and list it on my web site in order to attract customers to hire me, as unfortunately some magicians do. Even if I critique my own show, analyzing what is good and what didn't work, still, the job of the reviewer should belong to the audience.
It is difficult for me to review myself performing a magic show, except if I am shamelessly trying to promote my own business and trying to attract customers to hire me. And be careful! I have seen some web sites that review other magicians and I can easily see that those sites are creating false reviews for other magicians. I like to be clear with my customers about what I offer in my shows.

From my experience as a professional magician, people like to hear (in the reviews) the opinions from other people (See magician reviews) about services offered by the entertainer. The review is one more factor that helps people make a decision while planning a party or event when they don't personally know the entertainer or have never seen the show.

Even though it's sometimes difficult to capture the entire experience of a magic show in a review, the customers can use it along with some other factors in making a decision about who they want to hire for an event. For instance, they can consider if the magician is an "amateur magician" or a "professional magician." At either level, they are both magicians. But at the end is the customer needs to decide who is the most appropriate entertainer magician for the party.

Kids Birthday Parties and Adults Birthday Parties

For the last 4 weeks, people have asked me if I perform for adults birthday parties, too. The answer is yes, I do. I work for kids birthday parties as well as adults birthday parties. I can also perform magic shows at weddings, anniversaries or reunions.

On my web site of magic shows I have information for the kids parties (including schools, too), but I have a special magic show for adults. In the end, it seems like the same magic show works for everyone (kids and adults too), because adults love the kids show, too. But really it is not the same. There are many things that are changed. Some tricks used for a kids party don't work very well for an adult party. A few tricks work perfectly for both (kids and adults parties). But the way the magician carries out the show makes all the difference.

A holiday weekend full of kids parties!

The last weekend I did four magic shows, and they were great. Nice People and great parties!

Every time I try to predict if a party could be good or not, but it is very difficult. Each has different styles, different cultures and different ways to have a party.

Also, the weekend brought beautiful days with a lot of sun. Two of the parties were outdoors. I was really hot because I was wearing my red magic jacket. I needed to use it because I hold tricks in my pockets, and it is part of my look as a magician!

I needed to drive about two hours between the parties, which is a long time, but when I go to perform a magic show, I don’t care how many hours I need to drive. It is about my passion for magic. I love to anticipate how the people are going to react to my show at the party, and I also think about ways my show can improve the party. I enjoy performing magic shows at the party, but also I work hard to entertain the people, and I think that the big point in this profession is that the people will be happy at the party with the magic show. I am happy when the people feel happy at the party and enjoy the show. It’s a good way for people to relax and take a break from all the stress, to laugh and enjoy something different, to forget their routines and pressures of their jobs. That’s my goal with each show. I enjoy doing my magic for the people, bringing laughs of illusions!

I don’t have the words to explain how I feel when the people at the party can’t stop laughing, and when I see the kids smiling. They ask me how I do the tricks, or sometimes they try to explain the tricks to me. I feel happy when the kids and parents tell me stories about some memories in the past at other parties because I know that a good party can have a lasting effect with people. This is my medicine for the life: enjoy what I do! After a weekend like that, I feel happy and with energy to prepare the shows coming up the next few days. I need to drive a lot to Miami, Orlando, Sarasota and more cities! Wow, it’s a lot of miles that I need to drive, but I’m always thinking that at the end of the trip are kids and parents waiting to see something different and amazing in my magic show! I am working hard to bring them a show that will make everyone have a great time!

MY SPANISH ACCENT FOR KIDS PARTY MAGIC SHOWS

My first language is Spanish, since I am living in the United States I am learning English as a second language, it is not easy for me. Now I know a little more English than when I came here 7 years ago. I know that I have an accent when I speak English, and it seems like it works very good for the magic shows, after the magic show most people think that I speak English with an accent to make the show more funny (by the way my show is comedy magic).

I play a game with the kids telling words in English and Spanish, it is very funny. Sometimes in my magic shows, the kids try to speak Spanish with me like Buenos Dias Mr. Magician. When I go to the school to perform a magic show, the teachers like that I repeat some words in Spanish, so the kids can learn a couple words or just practice with me in Spanish. Everything seems like my accent works very well for my magic shows, but for the call phones, the accent doesn't work very well as it does for the magic shows. Most people don’t care about my accent over the phone and they just wait for me to do a great magic show at the party (see my reviews from the happy customers after the magic show).

When the people call me for information about a magic show or to book the show they can hear an accent and the questions begin - Do you think that the kids can understand you at the magic show because of your accent? -- Ooops. It's hard to answer because two things are coming to my mind. Number one I am sure that not only the kids can understand and will enjoy the show, but also the parents will understand and enjoy it as much as the kids! And number two, how do I convince the person so they will understand. I have a customer that asked the question about whether the kids could understand my accent at the show, I said: Yes it is different when I speak over the phone to when I am showing the tricks and speaking with the kids at the show. Then she said: I don’t think that the kids will understand. I said well I can’t do anything over the phone or say anything over the phone to show you how the kids will enjoy the show, the only way is to do it at your party, she was really nervous to hire me for the party, but after three calls she booked the show with me…

I was really nervous to do the party for her, because she seemed very picky about everything. But here is a new goal for me to show myself that I can do the party, even with my accent. I was there early (like always). About 40 kids were playing at the park, and I was preparing everything for the show. The mom called the kids to sit down and be ready for the magic show with Cesar Domico. I was starting to relax. The kids were making noises everywhere, then I started the show. I soon got their attention. Good start, let's go for more tricks… after 20 minutes the kids and parents were enjoying the show, but let's go, I have another 20 minutes… after 40 minutes the people were in a great mood. They were really happy and I was happy too, again, the power of belief in myself won over my thoughts and fears. After the party the mom was busy and I didn't have any reviews that day from her, but after 4 days they contacted me to say thank you and they gave permission to use them as a reference to my future customers.

Still I am nervous and worry about my accent, especially when the people call and ask me about my accent for the kids magic shows. But since I don’t have anything to show the truth over the phone, I just believe in myself, and even if some people don’t hire me because of my accent, still I am working to fix the accent and perform magic shows where the people want to improve the party!

MAGIC TRICK

I would like to share some magic tricks with you guys. The people after a magic trick ask: - how you do that? then, - it is amazing!!!. Well, yes it is amazing, but it is amazing because everybody can enjoy the magic, and maybe try some tricks. Now I would like to describe a magic trick the name is Watching your eyes! it is simple, but amazing!

The spectator takes one card and shows it to the audience. Then he puts it back in the deck, and he cuts the deck three times. The magician takes the deck and looks at the cards, also at the spectator eyes, because the eyes can tell many things, one begins the card! The magician takes one card from the deck and puts it on the table face down, and asks the spectator. Which is your card? The spectator says his card, then the magician tells him to turn the card on the table face up, the spectator does so and the card on the table is the spectator’s card.
